Then it comes to the art of music

Here we all probably can agree that the human voice is the ultimate stuff... But then it comes to equipment there is only one rule - you must feel fine with it to get the inspiration to make music. Even the most simple music tools can work well. Just a thought. Svante

I like to use different mics for different things usually for different hardware chains. Just invested in a ribbon mic after hearing a demo of an pre-amp (modelling practise amp) miked using a ribbon into DAW.

When it comes to mics, the preamp is just as important. You can spend thousands on a good mic...only to run it through a noisy preamp. Don't. Make the investment It is well worth it.

I totally agree: a mute midi keyboard (extended) and a good mic do the job. Software can be quite amazing to substitute hardware, however a controller gives more flexibility for producers who like to play/record live.
In terms of brands for the keyboard I'd suggest Edirol (Roland) and for the mic Rode is a trusted brand (normally popular among podcasters).
